Onset of Glacier Tables

چکیده

A glacier table consists of a rock supported by slender column ice and form naturally on glaciers. We investigate the onset their formation at smaller scale in controlled environment. Depending size thermal conductivity cap, it can either standing an foot, or sink into block. one-dimension conduction model shows that differential melting is competition between two effects: geometrical amplification, heat flux reduction due to higher temperature cap as compared ice. Our captures transition regimes identifies dimensionless number which controls tables formation.Received 12 March 2021Accepted 29 July 2021DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.127.108501© 2021 American Physical SocietyPhysics Subject Headings (PhySH)Research AreasFlow boundary instabilitiesGeophysicsPhysical SystemsInterfacesFluid DynamicsInterdisciplinary PhysicsPolymers & Soft MatterGeneral PhysicsNonlinear Dynamics

Glacier surge mechanism: 1982-1983 surge of variegated glacier, alaska.

The hundredfold speedup in glacier motion in a surge of the kind the kind that took place in Variegated Glacier in 1982-1983 is caused by the buildup of high water pressure in the basal passageway system, which is made possible by a fundamental and pervasive change in the geometry and water-transport characteristics of this system. The behavior of the glacier in surge has many remarkable featur...

Rheology of glacier ice.

A new method for calculating the stress field in bounded ice shelves is used to compare strain rate and deviatoric stress on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The analysis shows that strain rate (per second) increases as the third power of deviatoric stress (in newtons per square meter), with a constant of proportionality equal to 2.3 x 10(-25).

A Theory of Glacier Surges

We propose a model of glacier flow for at least a hundred years, and a major conthat is capable of explaining temperate glacier ference (see Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, surges. The laws of conservation of mass and vol. 6, pp. 807-1018, 1969) was devoted to their momentum are supplemented by the prescription study. Meier and Post [1969] summed up many of of a sliding law that gives the b...

The Mechanics of Glacier Flow

The flow of valley glaciers is examined in the light of recent laboratory experiments on the behaviour of ice under load. Simple expressions are given for the velocity distributions in some cases of laminar flow, and the modification of a pure laminar flow theory necessary to explain the formation of transverse crevasses and thrust planes is considered. The paper ends with some remarks about th...
